Washer Shakes Violently During Spin? Here's What's Wrong

June 20, 2025· 4 min read·By Tampa Bay Appliance Repair

If your washer walks across the laundry room on spin, here are the four most common causes — only one requires a tech.

1. Unbalanced load

A single heavy item (comforter, bath mat) thrown to one side. Pause the cycle, redistribute, and restart. If it happens every load, the issue is mechanical.

2. Leveling feet out of adjustment

Tampa Bay homes settle. Use a bubble level on the top of the washer and adjust the four feet — front feet usually thread; rear feet self-level when you tilt the machine forward and set it down.

3. Shipping bolts still installed

On brand-new front-loaders, four bolts on the back hold the drum during shipping. They MUST be removed. Symptoms: violent shake from the very first load.

4. Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods

Top-loaders use suspension rods; front-loaders use shock absorbers. Both wear out at 6–10 years and let the drum slam side to side. Worth repair if the machine is under 10 years old.
