Washer Not Draining? 5 Fixes Before You Call a Tech
Standing water in the drum? Before you book a service call, walk through these 5 checks. Most Tampa Bay washer drainage issues come down to one of these.
1. Pull the drain pump filter
On front-loaders (Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, Electrolux), there's a small filter behind a flap at the bottom-front of the machine. Unscrew it over a towel — expect water and a surprising amount of lint, coins, and hair clips.
This single step solves about 40% of drainage calls. Do it every six months as preventive maintenance.
2. Check the drain hose for kinks or clogs
Pull the washer out and look at the hose running to the standpipe. A kink behind the machine or a clog at the standpipe will stop drainage cold. The standpipe should be at least 30 inches tall.
3. Run a hot cycle with washer cleaner
Florida humidity grows biofilm fast. Affresh, Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, or even a cup of bleach on a hot empty cycle can dissolve a soap-scum blockage in the pump.
4. Reset the control board
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes. On many newer machines this clears a stuck drain command — especially after a power flicker, which Tampa Bay gets several times a summer.
5. Listen during the drain cycle
Start a drain/spin and listen. A faint hum with no water movement = failed pump. Clicking or grinding = pump motor seized or impeller broken. Silence = bad control board or wire harness. This is the point to call a tech.
