About microwave repair in Tampa Bay

Why microwaves fail in Florida — and how we fix them.

Built-in and over-the-range microwaves are repair-worthy when they're integrated into cabinetry (replacement requires matched trim and pro install) and usually replacement-worthy on countertop units. We service built-in Bosch, KitchenAid, GE Monogram, Wolf, Sharp drawer, and every OTR brand common in Tampa Bay kitchens.

Most microwave failures are magnetrons, door switches, high-voltage diodes/capacitors, or the fan motor on OTRs that handles the cooktop exhaust below. We're trained on the high-voltage discharge procedure — microwaves store enough energy to kill even when unplugged, which is why generic handymen shouldn't touch them.

If your microwave hums but doesn't heat, sparks inside, won't start unless you press the door, or the vent fan rattles loudly, book a diagnostic. Flat-rate written quote, one-year warranty on every repair.

Symptoms we fix

If your microwave is doing any of this, book a diagnostic.

  • Won't heat
  • Sparking
  • Turntable stuck
  • Door switch
  • Loud fan

What's included

Every microwave job covers:

  • Magnetron test
  • Door-switch replacement
  • Diode/cap check
  • Vent service

Common causes

The failures we see most on microwaves.

Five to seven failures account for the vast majority of microwave service calls. Here's what we find on the truck.

  1. 01

    Magnetron failed

Microwave runs but food stays cold, sometimes with a louder-than-usual hum. Magnetron replacement requires full disassembly and HV discharge — not a DIY job.

  2. 02

    Door switch (interlock) failure

Won't start, sometimes throws an SE error or simply does nothing. Microwaves have three interlock switches in series — usually only one has failed but we replace all three.

  3. 03

    High-voltage diode or capacitor shorted

Loud hum, breaker trips, no heat. The diode is a $20 part, the capacitor isn't much more — but both must be discharged and tested with HV-rated equipment.

  4. 04

    Turntable motor seized

Microwave heats but turntable doesn't rotate — cold spots in food. Small motor, cheap swap, 30–45 minutes.

  5. 05

Vent / blower fan failure (OTR)

Over-the-range units have a fan that exhausts the cooktop below. Bearings fail, fan rattles, exhaust performance drops. Common after 5–7 years in heavy-use kitchens.

  6. 06

    Control panel water damage

Touch panel ghost-presses or goes unresponsive. Steam from the cooktop below is the usual culprit. Panel replacement, 45–60 minutes.

Typical pricing

Honest flat-rate ranges for microwave repair.

Real ranges from real jobs. You'll get a written all-in quote before any work starts — these are not gotcha estimates.

RepairTypical range
Diagnostic visit$99
Magnetron$245 – $365
Door switch assembly (all 3)$165 – $245
High-voltage diode / capacitor$195 – $305
Turntable motor & coupler$145 – $225
OTR vent fan / blower$245 – $365
Touch-control panel$285 – $445

Pricing reflects parts + labor for typical residential installs. Premium built-in units (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele) and sealed-system work run higher and are quoted individually.

Brand-specific notes

What we see on each brand of microwave.

Each manufacturer has its own characteristic failure patterns. Here's what to expect — and what to ask your tech about — by brand.

Bosch / Thermador

Built-in microwave drawers and combi-microwave wall ovens — door-latch and inverter-board service. Brand-specific procedures required.

KitchenAid / GE Monogram

Built-in trim-kit installs — replacement is expensive because the trim must match, so repair is usually the right call.

Sharp / Wolf drawer

Drawer microwaves have a different mechanism — slide assembly and motor service, plus the standard HV components.

Samsung / LG / Whirlpool OTR

Magnetrons, door switches and vent fans dominate. Often more cost-effective to replace if the unit is past 7 years.

FAQ

Microwave Repair questions, answered.

Call 813-295-7400 for anything else — a real dispatcher will pick up.

Is a microwave that hums but doesn't heat worth repairing?+

On built-in or drawer microwaves, almost always — magnetron and HV parts are reasonable, and replacement requires matching trim kits. On countertop or basic OTR units past 5 years, usually not.

Is it safe to use a microwave with sparking inside?+

No. Sparking usually means a damaged waveguide cover (cheap fix) or a damaged cavity wall (harder). Stop using it and book a diagnostic — continued use will damage the magnetron.

Do you service microwave drawers?+

Yes — Sharp, Wolf, Bosch and the few other drawer-microwave platforms. Slide-mechanism service, motor replacement, plus the standard HV components.

Why is my over-the-range microwave so loud when venting?+

Bearings in the blower fan are dying. Replace before they seize completely — a seized fan can also stop the microwave from operating safely.
